The Gnomon Workshop and Design Studio Press are thrilled
to bring you some holiday cheer in the form of new DVDs
from veteran Scott Robertson, and the first DVDs from
the concept designer known as Puddnhead.
Scott Robertson brings a three-volume series on rendering
matte surfaces. The titles cover shading planar, round,
and complex curved surfaces. While Scott uses analog tools,
such as charcoal and pencil, the skills are vital for
anyone interested in foundation lighting concepts.
Puddnhead, with his two new DVDs, offers a look into his
unique style and techniques for creature design, from
the character’s abstract beginnings, to its culmination
as a fully rendered digital painting created in Corel
Painter 9. Puddnhead’s diverse career has taken
him from being a concept artist for such companies as
Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia and others,
to influencing the designs of such films as Cat in
the Hat, Daredevil, Elektra, and Pirates
of the Caribbean.

The Gnomon Workshop just completed its first ever Gnomon
Workshop: Live!
weekend. This event featured some awesome artists from
the gaming, visual
effects and concept design industries, and attracted
enthusiastic artists
from (literally) around the globe. In addition to non-stop
presentations,
attendees were able to talk one-on-one with art directors,
recruiters and
artists from Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Computer Entertainment
America,
Electronic Arts, Blur, Blizzard, Ubisoft, Zoic sudios,
Feng Zhu Design,
Dreamworks Animation and Disney's Circle Seven studios.
Gnomon Workshop: Live! treated attendees to two full days
of incredible
presentations by artists who included Eric Hanson, Neville
Page, Kevin
Hudson, Zack Petroc, Dylan Cole, Scott Robertson, Ryan
Church, Christian
Lorenz Scheurer, Mayan Escalante and the legendary Meats
Meier. Attendees
were also able too purchase books and DVDs from our Gnomon
Workshop store.
Saturday night brought a different kind of celebration,
when Robochrist
presented a fire-filled display of incredible remote-controlled
robots, some
with huge, clawlike teeth that collectively impaled, crushed
and burned
specially-built props as the audience cheered (and, in
some cases, ducked!).
The benefits of the weekend extended far beyond the presentations.
During
their talks, artists brought attendees into their working
processes,
revealing the thoughts behind the brush strokes, the method
behind the
techniques. Many of these generous folks lingered beyond
their presentation
time, answering questions, and offering even more information
for the
curious. So many conversations and meetings generated
from the weekend:
those between people who came from opposite ends of the
earth, to those who lived just down
the road from eachother...and it gave us a chance to meet
all of you!
This entertainment,
education festival was such a great experience for everyone
involved that we are repeating it the weekend of February
18th,
2006. Speakers are already being booked, and will be announced
shortly.
Can't wait to see you again, and meet some new faces as
well!

This year will be a landmark time for the Gnomon Workshop as we venture
forward with many more visual effects and concept design titles. Things are
very exciting for us, and the community, as we continue to work with leading
industry artists and designers. We have close to 100 titles in development
for 2005 release. The Gnomon Workshop has grown a lot. We first of all want
to thank the community for all of its support and enthusiasm for our
efforts. We are passionate about education and are truly honored to be
working with such amazing talent.
This month we will have two sets of releases. Today we are announcing seven
new Digital DVDs that cover Digital Sets, Panoramic Imaging, Photogrammetry
and ZBrush.
Eric Hanson, a leader in the field of Digital Sets for film, with credits
that range from The Fifth Element and The Day After Tomorrow, has
completed three DVDs on urban Digital Set creation. These titles cover
Design, Modeling, Texturing, Lighting, Rendering and Compositing using Maya
and Shake.
We also welcome Greg Downing, a pioneer in the fields of panoramic spherical
photography and image based modeling, who has completed three in-depth DVDs.
The image based techniques of photogrammetry and panoramas have wide
applications in the visual effects field, and Greg's DVDs highlight the
unique techniques that he has developed over the years.
Alex Alvarez has returned to DVD production with the creation of his first
ZBrush title. Alex has been a 3D character artist for many years and has now
fully embraced ZBrush, an amazing new medium for digital sculpting. His
eight-hour DVD focuses on the detailed head sculpting and texturing of a new
character.
Later this month, we are also excited to be releasing an additional eight
new titles by concept designers Iain McCaig, Scott Robertson and Aaron Sims.
Designs by these artists can be seen in a myriad of films including Star
Wars: Episode One, Minority Report, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and
upcoming films such as War of the Worlds and Fantastic Four. Look for
news about these titles in the coming weeks.
