Efficient Cinematic Lighting

This week, The Gnomon Workshop welcomes back Pixar Lighting TD Jeremy Vickery for his second tutorial release. In Efficient Cinematic Lighting, Jeremy delves deeper into his lighting strategies and goes in depth on topics such as lenses and layout, composition and framing, lighting for tone and mood, as well as various lighting techniques within Maya and VRay. Jeremy also shows how to handle various day/night lighting conditions, as well as how to use implied lighting and light pools to provide the illusion of an existing world outside of the camera view. This lecture is packed with information that will defintely add impact and a sense of artistry to your renders.

Concept Design: From Abstraction to Production

Today, The Gnomon Workshop announces the addition of a new concept design tutorial to our library. In this lesson, concept designer Aaron Limonick shows off his design tricks in Concept Design: From Abstraction to Production. Aaron starts with a simple ink blot image, cropping a portion of it to generate the foundation composition for his design. Using this technique, he is able to generate the basis for an image that he would probably not have imagined if he were to start the design from a blank page.

The ultra high resolution 3D illustraton titled Gathering, is the latest in a line of personal pieces from one of the most imaginative minds in the industry.

Environment Sculpting with David Lesperance

Today, The Gnomon Workshop welcomes the exceptional environment artist, David Lesperance, to our ever growing training library. Simply titled Environment Sculpting, David unveils his workflow used to create stunning and fantastic environments. His process takes you through using the DynaMesh tool within ZBrush® to quickly and efficiently create variants of environmental assets. He then shows how he decimates the high resolution mesh down to a manageable base resolution to extract normal maps. His process also includes designing a host of architectural assets in 3ds Max®, adding high frequency detail in ZBrush®, then rendering and compositing them for presentation purposes. Throughout the lecture, David touches on topics like the importance repeating features in architectural design and using fine detail to demonstrate scale within the scene. This tutorial reveals true production methods of one of the more talented environment artist in the industry today.
