THE GNOMON WORKSHOP
RELEASES
SEVEN AMAZING DVDS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
This week, The Gnomon Workshop is thrilled to announce a huge end of year training DVD release, covering a myriad of subjects from Matte Painting and Character Animation, to Digital Illustration, Creature and Character Design.
From returning instructor Terryl Whitlatch, creature design legend of Star Wars: Episode One, we have a continuation of her creature design series. Volume 3 in her series covers horse-based creature design and delves into horse anatomy while Volume 4 covers her design and story development for a Toad-Ogre creature.
Christian Alzmann, from ILM, joins our ever-growing library with his first DVD titled Digital Illustration Techniques. This title covers his illustration techniques using Painter and Photoshop, as he discusses composition, light and shadow, using reference, applying color and storytelling devices.
Scott Patton, from Legacy Effects, delivers a two volume series on 3D Character Design. In these DVDs he shows the processes he uses to create finished character designs for feature films, using ZBrush and Photoshop. His workflow skips the 2D sketch phase all together as he designs the character entirely within ZBrush. The benefit of this method of design is that it’s more interactive and has allowed him to work with directors one-on-one directly in 3D.
And we have two new additions to the Behind the Scenes Series of DVDs which follows the creation of a game cinematic sequence from concept to completion. In Volume Six, Burke Roane, of Rhythm and Hues, demonstrates the process for animating an action sequence and a close-up of the lead character in Maya. In Volume Seven, Jared Simeth, of Luma Pictures, shows his process for creating two matte paintings using Maya and Photoshop. Both DVDs feature production meetings with either the Art Director or Animation Supervisor.
See more information on all of these great titles below.
Digital Illustration Techniques with Christian Alzmann
DVD Description:
|
The process of telling stories through pictures is similar for both concept design and book illustration. In this video, film design veteran Christian Alzmann will take you through a step-by-step process for making a digital illustration. He will demonstrate his techniques for creating strong compositions, blocking in shapes with light and shadow, handling background elements and applying color. Throughout the lecture, Christian shares his thought processes as he reworks compositional elements, renders reflected light and strengthens the main character’s pose, showing you the benefits of painting digitally in Adobe Photoshop® and Corel Painter.
"Christian is a lover of the golden age of illustration. He loves painting and teaching and if you watch this tutorial you’ll be catching him at his best. There’s no way you’ll walk away from his video empty handed. You can take my word for it. I’ve worked with him every day for the last 10 years and I’ve seen him grow from a student to now a teacher."

3D Character Design Volume 1 Proto-concepting for Film with Scott Patton
DVD Description:
|
In this DVD, Scott Patton shows the processes he uses to create finished character designs for feature films. This DVD explores Patton’s fast and efficient method for concept sculpting, skipping the 2D sketch phase all together and designing the character entirely within ZBrush. This method of design is more interactive and has allowed him to work with directors one-on-one directly in 3D. From basic form to final detail, Patton uses a combination of ZBrush’s tools and straight forward explanations to show how a character can be created without the usual time restrictions and hassle of most 3D packages. He covers everything from blocking out the forms and fleshing out the muscles, to adding props, detailing with alphas and posing the character.

3D Character Design Volume 2 From Concept Model to Presentation Art with Scott Patton
DVD Description:
|
In this DVD, Scott Patton continues from 3D Character Design Volume 1 to show the processes he uses to create finished character designs for feature films. This DVD explores Patton’s fast and efficient methods for creating a final color rendering using ZBrush® and Photoshop®. Patton shows how he squeezes the most from ZBrush’s powerful renderer, side-stepping the often complex renderers of standard 3D packages. In creating both a wide and close-up shot of the character, he shares creative Photoshop tips and tricks to quickly get to a finished piece of concept art from the ZBrush renders, covering topics such as adding and refining skin texture, hair, eyes, shadows and scars. Patton also discusses how to quickly create backgrounds that enhance the character and overall composition.
"Scott Patton is a witch! Burn him! How else can you explain how he’s so good at designing characters in 3-D? I don’t think you can. No mere mortal can sculpt in 3-D with such swiftness and dexterity as he does. The best animators I’ve worked with can barely match the eye he has for detail. No… definitely a witch."
Andrew Stanton
Writer/Director Wall-e, John Carter of Mars
|
Instructor Bio:
Scott Patton started his career as a make-up effects artist in the 1990s, developing his sculpting, painting and design skills under the tight production deadlines of the movie industry. Patton’s work as a make-up effects artist can be seen in a diverse range of films from Sin City and Kill Bill to Amistad and The Green Mile. While working on the Academy Award winning The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Patton discovered ZBrush and quickly realized that this tool could speed up the often frustrating character design process. Joining practical and digital sculpting in his production workflow, Patton joined Stan Winston Studios and the design team for James Cameron’s Avatar. After the unfortunate death of Stan Winston in 2008, Patton helped the remaining S.W. team in creating a digital design department for their new company Legacy Effects. Since that time, Patton and Legacy have designed characters for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, John Carter of Mars, Pandorum, Iron Man 2, Thor, Cowboys and Aliens, Terminator Salvation and more.
Creature Design with Terryl Whitlatch 3 The Marine Mare and Uberhorse
DVD Description:
|

Relax as she guides you through the intricacies of leg and hoof structure, as well as the sensitive head, powerful muscles, and noble spirit—all essentials for designing a believable but imaginary steed. From there she covers how to create a mount powerful enough to carry a hero of yore, and then goes on to design an exotic, literal sea horse—a mare that is at home both on land and in the ocean—as well as its reptilian rider. Throughout the DVD, she explores different poses and drawing studies of both horse creatures, giving you insights into her development and thought processes.
