The Gnomon Workshop sells tutorials by various professional artists in Both DVD and Digital Download format. Our DVDs are further categorized as either DVD-Video or DVD-Rom. A DVD-video is like any "Hollywood" movie DVD and will play on a DVD-player connected to a TV set or on a computer. The movie dimensions for these lectures are either 640x480 or 853x480(widescreen) which is standard for all standard-definition DVDs.
Our DVD-Rom discs play in computer DVD-Rom players ONLY and are compatible with both Mac and PC computers. The lectures on these DVDs are QuickTime movies usually sized at 1024x768. The only SOFTWARE requirements for these DVDs are Apple QuickTime player and Adobe Acrobat (to read the associated PDF files). For other requirements please see the DVD's product page
The Gnomon Workshop now sells tutorials in the Digital Download format as well. These files are all QuickTime movies and are identical in aspect ratio and dimension to the corresponding tutorial on DVD. Hence, a download from a DVD-Video is delivered as a 640x480 (or 853x480) QuickTime movie, and the download files from DVD-ROMs are generally 1024x768. The Download tutorials are similar to the DVDs in that they contain an intro movie as well as any project content (drawings, Maya files, textures etc.) that you would otherwise receive on the corresponding DVD.
When you purchase a Digital Download tutorial you will not receive the DVD, you must purchase one or the other (DVD or Download). The advantage to ordering the Download is that you don't have to pay shipping costs and you can start downloading the tutorial in seconds after your purchase. The advantage to ordering a DVD is that it is a tangible product that organizes the lectures with menu navigation, is television playable (for DVD-videos only) and easily portable. If you intend on ordering a lot of tutorials, you will want to consider purchasing DVDs instead of Downloads because it does take time to download the tutorials (with limitations in bandwidth across networks). We also offer bulk discounts for DVDs only. Please see the item below "How does the Digital Download work?" for more information and limitations of purchasing a Digital Download file.
When you purchase a Digital Download you purchase the whole tutorial and corresponding assets, if any. You cannot purchase individual chapters. All of the Download files are in .Zip folders and require unarchiving. There are many free un-archiving, or uncompressing, programs available if you do not already have one installed. Once you have made your purchase, you can go to your account page (if you have signed up to have an account) to see your order history and download your tutorials. If you have made your purchase as a Guest, you can access your tutorials after your purchase at the bottom of the purchase confirmation page or via an email receipt that you will receive after the purchase. The email will contain a link to the download page and a unique password. You will have 48 hrs to download your tutorials so we strongly advise not purchasing more than 5 Downloadable tutorials at a time. If you are interested in bulk purchases we advise you to purchase DVDs as it is more time-effective and in many instances therefore cost-effective.
You have exactly 48 hours from the time of purchase to download your tutorials.
If at any time during the 48 hour download window, you encounter problems downloading your files we will work to fix the issue and/or extend the download window.
