Thibaud Guedon, GW Username: GTpix
GW: How did you hear about the Gnomon contest? TG: First, I was searching on the internet for some tutorials about Maya, 3DS Max, Blender... Then I saw the Gnomon website. I was very suprised by the quality of the images proposed on the forum. I saw lots of great pics done by millions of people all around the world. I tried to work on Maya (6 years ago), but I discover this application by myself. My english was not very good at this time, so I progressed very slowly. Understanding this application takes very long. Then Gnomon proposed some contests. I was waiting for a challenge I could do. GW: When you won the challenge, were you a student, professional or hobbyist? TG: When I won the challenge, I was a hobbyist. First time I worked on a 3D package, I was a graphic designer in an agency, 6 years ago. I was doing my first works on Bryce 4, spending my weekend time learning an old version of Maya. GW: Has your status changed since, and if so what influence did the DVDs have? Where do you study/work and what do you do? TG: I think winning the dvds made me progress a lot. Now I use different methods to model and render images. I'm a graphic designer in the textile industry, in the marketing and communications department. When I won the dvds, I had a discussion with my chief and proposed to put 3D in front of the things I can do. Now, I work in the Merchandising Department of this company and I can use the 3D package for my work, making some virtual scenes, department stores and point of sale furniture, walls, 3D logos, etc. I think my new chief appreciate this. In January, in parallel to this work, I started to work for myself, proposing 3D modeling and animations, videos, graphics... GW: Of the titles you won, which do you feel had the biggest impact? TG: I think the best dvd I watched is the one about Mental Ray - Global Illumination (rendering techniques with Matt Hartle) because before that, I didn't render anything with Mental Ray.GW: How important do you feel communities, like the Gnomon Workshop Forum, are to your growth as an artist? TG: For me, communities and forums are the best thing we can find on the internet. Everyone can help the others, give information. Criticism and comments are very well appreciated. It make everyone progress. GW: After viewing the DVDs has your career path changed in a direction you didn't expect? For example, new interest in design, rendering, matte painting, dynamics, etc? TG: As I told you, now my work is directly connected to my profession. But I think everything interests me, especially the matte painting.
